In order to lower the probability of accidents due to inexperienced riders, the compulsory basic training, or CBT test was introduced. As of today, you must complete your CBT before being allowed to ride a moped or a motorcycle up to 125cc, provided the vehicle is fitted with L-plates, for up to 2 years. Merlin Motorcycle Training has helped over 2500 riders train for and undertake their CBT in Worcestershire since 1999.
The CBT course for motorcycle riding is divided into 5 phases:
• Practical on-site training
• Practical on-site riding
• Practical on-road training
• Practical on-road riding
Once all 5 phases have been completed satisfactorily, you will receive a certificate of completion called the DL196, which validates the relevant entitlements mentioned in your driving licence:
Age 16 Category P/AM maximum 50cc (geared or automatic)
Age 17+ Category A maximum 125cc (geared or automatic)
On the day you will have to bring certain documents such as both parts of your UK licence (card & paper card). If your licence is in the old format, you will also be required to produce a valid passport. Please carry your original passport, as photocopies will not be accepted.
